Installation river water, glass bottles, stainless steel, video. Canberra Museum and Galleries 2010/11
This exhibition celebrates the physical and cultural aspects of the Murrumbidgee River and documents the stories of the people who have connection with it.
It explores the fundamental importance of rivers as a source of fresh water imperative for fertility, cleansing and healing, and celebrated with rituals through the history of humanity. It questions our contemporary view of rivers and our understanding of their fragile existence.
The Murrumbidgee River serpentines through the landscape, sometimes only a trickle on its sandy bed, at other times a raging torrent that sweeps clean everything in its path. In this installation its waters are suspended like drops of rain frozen in time, symbolising the people who rely on it for their livelihood and their spiritual well-being.
